Bubble Boy! What do you think when you hear those words. I think of this movie, the lastest movie to mw reviewed on TwoThumbsUp. Sadly though I cannot give you a thumbs up on this one Bubble Boy. There are two movies called Bubble Boy. One stars John Travolta and is based on a true story. I have not seen that one (yet), but I sure want to. I have heard that that Bubble Boy is both a very serious and sad movie. The other Bubble Boy, the one reviewed in this blog stars Jake Gyllenhal. It is fictional, not based on a true story. A comedy, weird at best. Some things that happened in this movie could definitely not happen in real life. Like the part when the entire bubble fit through really skinny doors. A huge bubble like that could not fit through a door that skinny! I will admit there were some parts of this movie I thought were good like when Jimmy, The Bubble Boy, sang the Pledge of Allegiance because he was experiencing some changes in his life. Is that what happens to you when you see a girl that is pretty? Uh oh! There was also a scene where Jimmy tried ice cream for the first time and he loved it so much he started laughing like a jack in the box! That was pretty funny.
While the movie was a comedy, there is a real disease that causes people to actually live in a bubble. It's true. People who have this disease simply don't have the immune system to fight germs. That means that if the tiniest germ touches them, they could die. So they live in a bubble for their whole life so they can't come in contact of any germs. Wow, could you imagine that?
Jake Gyllenhal was very good. He played the main character, Jimmy. He lived in the bubble. Gyllenhal has had a great film career. From a boy who lives in a bubble, to a rocket scientist, to a cowboy. Jake can do it all. He can be funny, serious, and romantic. Unfortunately for Jake though even the best acting sometimes can't save a poorly written movie. There were plenty of things not to like in this flick. One being when the biker dude and bubble boy go to Las Vegas and are just blabbering about all kinds of irrelevent stuff. There was just no point to it. And there was no point to much of the rest of the movie. For a comedy the laughs were few and far between. Sorry folks but this movie should be kept in the bubble. Overall I give this movie 1 popcorn bucket out of a possible 4.
