It is time to take a break from the past and head into the present. With the Oscars less then 2 months away, it is time for you to start seeing what is out there now. The last movie that I saw is entitled Invictus (PG-13). It stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon with classic director Clint Eastwood. It is about the legendary Nelson Mandala of South Africa. It takes place in 1995 which is around the time Mandala is let free from prison and is elected as president of South Africa. He is entering a tough time in his country as the whites and blacks separate themselves. He tries to inspire the country by using their rugby team; the spring box. He talks to captain Francois Pienaar. At first he isn't a fan of him but then he comes around and finds an interesting feature about him. He then helps inspire his team who help inspire the world by trying to win the world cup. They are big underdogs against most of the other teams in the cup, but they have something the other teams do not have: passion. The movies shows how people who look different and think different, can be brought together as a nation by one thing. In their case it is a game known as rugby. Rugby is one of the most brutal sports ever to be played, but it really can make a difference in a country. Morgan Freeman was incredible. He took the role of Mandala and nailed it. He looked very similar to the real Mandala as well. He really made the people feel for him, and he showed the sensitive side of him. He made you feel for him. I also must compliment his accent. He really made me believe he was South African. In addition Damon did great. You see that he had to gain weight for the role of The Informant, but in this movie you do not see an ounce of fat on him. He did great portraying one of the most respected rugby players in its history. Eastwood is a genius. He made a movie nobody ever expected to made of at least made this well. He may be pushing eighty but he is still in his prime. The thing that I wish that there was more of is the living environment of South Africa. They had the scene where the spring box visited the kids, but I wished that there was more of how most South Africans lived. Where they lived and what they did to live. Overall I give this movie 4 popcorn buckets out of a possible 5. There was great acting, passion, and inspiration. You can be sure that you will see this movie come Oscar time. Remember, "If you want to find a flick, twothumbsup will help you pick."
